Michelangelo's David: A New Interpretation
Просмотров 7113 года назад
We are told that Michelangelo's statue of David portrays the young shepherd staring at his adversary, the Philistine warrior Goliath, just before battle. However, it may be useful to consider other possibilities. John Edwards describes another interpretation of the work of art that may expand our appreciation of and interest in this magnificent sculpture.
Composition In Relief Sculpture
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.5 лет назад
John Edwards describes the compositional elements of the first steps in the creation of a large relief sculpture. This first section is merely the basic geometrical pieces of what will become the more organic background for the presentation of a approximately life-size human figure in line with the other of his shamanistic figurative sculpture in this series. To see where this piece is, or may ...
Sculpture: Use of Found Objects--in this case Styrofoam
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.5 лет назад
John Edwards raided his neighbor's Christmas trash for large pieces of Styrofoam packing material (primarily from large appliances) in order to find big, odd, lightweight shapes. These shapes, in this case, became the background elements for a large panel, 4 by 8, feet which, in a future video, will be textured with a special lightweight plaster and serve as a surface on which to mount a close-...
Sculpture: What Are These Things?
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.5 лет назад
John Edwards sets out to explain in general terms some basic thought about how his current body of work 15 large scale figurative plaster images might be related to universal archetypal concepts having been created with no thought as to what, indeed, they might have been inspired by and what was going through his head while working on them. These are broad preliminary thoughts and will remainin...
Pengukir: the Malaysian word for "sculpture."

The music for this video is a combination of the score for the movie "Vice" by Nicholas Britell (c. Universal Music Group) and "Cosmic Beam" by Francisco Lupica. These two scores are overlaid to hopefully augment each at least for the purposes of this video. The source or inspiration for these sculpture (as of this writing there are 14 with a large 15th in the works) is very loosely derived fro...

This is a short video featuring a photographic study of my recently completed 14-piece sculptural series. I there's anyone out there who knows how to get this message through to the Dear Moon Project I would certainly appreciate it. John Edwards; cantopia100@gmail.com

Sculpture movie of fourteen Shamanistic protector beings built between 2014 and 2018 by John Edwards. As a young man Michelangelo imagined carving an entire mountain. Sculptor and art historian John Edwards examines the artist's casual day dream and finds fascinating implications.
MOVE MOSES
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.6 лет назад
Sculptor and art historian John Edwards proposes that Michelangelo's Moses, he the church of San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, is in the wrong place. He explains that the original plan for this masterpiece has been completely lost and that a simple improvement, while not restoring Michelangelo's vision, would go a long way to reconnect with the awesome way conception of this great work of art.
Ghirlandaio's Portrait of Michelangelo as a Young Boy?

In the beginning I thought this may have the potential to be a nice piece. However, I was more than disappointed in the end product where I could not make out what this hot mess was supposed to be. How can you find satisfaction in making something that no one can appreciate? My brother does the same thing in Montreal, seems to bell accomplished but I find all his pieces to be fodder for the landfill at best.

Personally, this is Michelangelos best work in my amateur opinion. To convey so much movement through marble is memorizing. In an era where so many legends thrived, this work just stamds out to me. And allegedly for this work to come from 15 year old is extraordinary. Masterpiece nonetheless

Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and method. Up until now, my work has been to commission so cast in bronze (since I did not bear the final cost!) and very realistic as that tends to be what my clients like. I work exactly the same way, with an armature of wire board and foam but with clay on top as the final work will be used to cast. I am really keen to do more experimental work large scale ......and of course bronze is totally out! I was looking for how to work with plaster and happened upon your videos. Utterly brilliant and inspiring! Love what you do and I am really excited to make some things with freedom. It is very generous of you to share how you work.

I create only from my unconscious in my paintings and drawings, I came across your videos because I am learning to use plaster for my sculpture class but want to continue creating from my hands/unconscious and with found materials rather than using moulds. You really inspired me and I resonate a lot with your process.

Hi John new to your channel I currently on a 3d sculpture painting course only the tutor advises you buy her ready made plaster for the work which is costing a fortune in postage costs from Russia to the UK. I do know a few other artists who have given away her secret which is a plaster named Clavel riviera decorative stone plaster with added fibres. This imitates the Mediterranean Old stone walls. Now having watched this I seen cellulose fibres are added to your plaster and a green stuff used for insulation. I've been experimenting with making my own texture paste which has to stand upto the tutors expectations for the lessons upto 5cms high some petals need to be oh these are flower sculptures and have found a decorative plaster in the UK called fox decorator a Polish company makes it and it has cellulose fibres inside. I do know this Clavel is fibreglass not cellulose. I'm wondering is that insulation stuff you use any good for adding too this decorative plaster do you think as at the min I'm just adding marble powder to thicken it up because it's already got the fibres added.

Finally somebody who knows what they're talking about and who understands Michelangelo's intentions. I've had this private thought for years that Moses should be raised up and perceived as close as practically possible to the perspective Michelangelo intended. People fail to realise that Michelangelo composed his figures with a particular veiwing perspective in mind hence that some of his figures can appear somewhat 'top heavy" when viewed straight on, Moses probably being the perfect example.

Wow, I build my under structures exactly the same way! I spend most of my time in hardware stores searching for materials that can take the place of specialized and costly prop building supplies. Spray foam, pourable super gloss, plumbing and masonry materials, foam insulation board...you name it! I often catch the “what the hell is this guy building?” Look from customers purchasing these items for their intended purposes..hahaha...whereas I almost never do

When I visited the Accademia in 2000, I took a picture of one of the slaves/prisoners/giants that really struck me. Something reminded me of it, so I've been doing some searching online for more information about it. Every site I've looked at shows the four in your video but not the one in my picture. I think I caught a glimpse of it at 3:19 in the background to the right of the frame. The figure is one of the more complete ones and he seems to be holding a book or tablet in his left hand. Do you have any information about that one? If not, do you know what people call it or where I could read more about it? Thanks.
